Montreal‐based software innovator Stelvio Inc has reacted to demands from the shipbroking sector for faster and more accurate vessel positioning and cargo order data by developing software which it claims will cut the workload by half.

Its ShipDecision software eliminates the need for brokers to search manually through the thousands of incoming daily emails. The Vessel Position feature of the system examines each incoming message and automatically extracts the critical vessel information such as the name, ownership and tonnage of the vessel; its region and position; and its open date range.

Through a unique algorithm, the system also ‘learns’ to adapt to various formats of information, so that it can extract the relevant data regardless of the format in which it is written. The Cargo Order feature of the system makes it easier for brokers to search for cargo orders by lay‐can date range; cargo type and quantity; zone and
port; and by latest date.

“Quickly matching the right ship to the right cargo, in the most cost effective manner, is a critical action in the maritime shipping industry,” claimed Albert Carbone, President of Stelvio Inc.

“The feedback we have had from the brokering community is that the Broker Module will make a real difference in day‐to‐day productivity,” he added. ShipDecision is a secure, web‐based system which fully integrates all the information and documents needed to manage cargo movement and vessel operations. With specific modules for Brokers, Operators, Charterers, Surveyors, Agents, Insurers and Registries, the system is intuitive to the industry and substantially improves the speed and efficiency of everyday processes.

ShipDecision’s broker module is already making life simpler for busy Montrealbased cargo brokerage house Gresco which recently signed a three‐year contract to use the system to handle the myriad of emails, faxes and requests received on a daily basis.

Gresco’s broking team receives more than 1,000 emails each day together with hundreds of phone calls and approximately 400 faxes per month. Perhaps the single biggest benefit of the ShipDecision Broker Module is that it eliminates the need for Gresco to search manually through the thousands of incoming daily emails.

In the coming months the Gresco team will begin to use the Cargo Order feature of the system, which will make it easier for the brokers to search for cargo orders by lay‐can date range; cargo type and quantity; zone and port; and by latest date.

A Gresco spokesperson said: “Efficiency is the ultimate benefit that Gresco has derived from ShipDecision. Quickly matching the right ship to the right cargo, in the most cost‐effective manner is critical to our business”.

Software solution provides First Aid for shipping industry

Ship owners and managers are drowning under a sea of paperwork – but help is at hand. ShipDecision’s comprehensive software system provides “triage” for shipping companies’ complicated data storage systems, according to its enthusiastic developer.Albert Carbone, CEO of Stelvio Inc, which has created the ShipDecision range of IT solutions, says the product’s structured information system provides essential benefits for busy shipping companies. “Think of it as data triage,” he explains, “our technology sorts through incoming information and brings the urgent matters to your attention.”

“I can tell you from experience that structured data, captured securely in a timely fashion and organised in a way that is intuitive to your own organisation, creates incredible opportunities to improve the speed, accuracy and effectiveness of your day-to-day business dealings,” he enthuses.

“And I can say this with a degree of confidence,” he continues, “Because since 1990 my company has applied these principles in creating systems for complex industries like automotive insurance and auto collision repair. We have a track record of processing more than 45 million transactions in North America and Australia.”

Now ShipDecision is bringing its unique software solution to Europe when it exhibits at next week’s major industry event, Nor-Shipping, in Oslo. The company firmly believes its carefully designed bespoke product provides a must-have tool for the shipping industry. Professional engineer and entrepreneur Mr Carbone explains: “ShipDecision was built from the ground up with collaboration from maritime industry insiders. Our goal was always clear – to create a secure, web-based system that could really connect everyone involved in the business of maritime shipping.

“As you know well, there are countless scenarios where problems arise and then get worse and more costly because of delayed or missing information. The more you can trace what’s happening at every stage of a voyage, the better you can control the outcome of any given situation. We have built ShipDecision to be a flexible, open system that really does solve the problem of information gathering, sharing and rapid retrieval.”

ShipDecision can provide a vital lifeline for shipping company operators, Mr Carbone points out. “Typically an operator arrives at the office in the morning and is faced with potentially hundreds of emails pertaining to multiple voyages under management. So imagine what it would be like to have a system that could automatically classify and process incoming event notifications and emails and extract status information regarding active voyages – what a lifesaver!

“And, even more importantly, the system flags up any items which require immediate attention. This means operators spend less time sorting through hundreds of emails and more time focusing on intervening quickly to correct specific problems.”

ShipDecision’s software provides specific I.T. solutions to a wide range of maritime businesses – including ship owners and managers, charterers, brokers, P&I clubs, registries and surveyors.

Visitors to Nor-Shipping will have the chance to see how the software works and be guided through it by Product Manager Olivier Rukerankiko. See ShipDecision on stand number B01-11

Mr Carbone says: “ShipDecision is a vital tool for any shipping company because it reduces paperwork and drudgery and allows you to focus on areas that truly need your attention. And in these trying times what better than to have more time to concentrate on what really matters.”
