Jamaica has maintained its position at the heart of international
maritime rule making following the re-election of Rear Admiral Peter
Brady, Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, as
chairman of the Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STW) sub-Committee
at the IMO.
He was unanimously
re-elected as chairman of its global standards of training and
certification sub-committee at an IMO meeting earlier this year.
It
is Admiral Brady's third term as chairman of the STW sub-committee
whose responsibility includes drawing up legislation as well as
rules and guidelines consistent with the International Convention
on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW).
This includes developing special seafarer training requirements
and model courses, setting performance standards and principles
and responsibilities to be observed by governments.

Jamaica
is becoming an accepted quality source of competent seafarers.
Approximately 2,500 Jamaican certificated seafarers, including
some 750 officers, have been trained at the Jamaica-based Caribbean
Maritime Institute (CMI) since its inception in 1980. This figure
does not include hospitality staff serving on cruise ships and
other vessels.
